An SRFI is a multi-purpose rail freight interchange and distribution ‘hub’ that is linked to both the rail and trunk road network. Acting as a regional ‘freight hub’ SRFI’s would be capable of transferring container contents to suitable road and rail services for regional and urban deliveries to existing stations.
The largest project by far is the Chinese investment in continental Eurasian rail freight to connect the new manufacturing locations in China and Asia with Europe. This practical initiative saves time on the much longer and slower sea route from the container ports on the East Coast and the long shipping route south around Indonesia and India back through the Suez.

However, there will remain the main choice of ships offering economies of scale and cost efficiencies, though the rail routes will offer a major time advantage for higher value goods or quicker delivery needs.
SRFI’s will be located away from residential settlements and particularly sensitive areas, and will be screened by land and landscape for visual and noise intrusion as well as for 24/7 operation.

High-standard landscaping and low carbon facilities will benefit sustainability on and off-site use.

Rail can deliver goods efficiently and reduce congestion on our roads, reducing carbon emissions. As major gateways to the national rail network, they allow businesses to move freight nationwide and in large quantities of intermodal containers, contributing to the regional and national economies.
